Mediator Training Class
August 4-8, 2008
A primary mediation class (40 hours CLE, 2 hours ethics) will be held on
August 4-8, 2008, at the Drake Legal Clinic, 2400 University, Des Moines,
Iowa.
- The instructor is Richard M. Calkins, former dean and professor, Drake Law
School.
- Dean Calkins teaches the caucus format of mediation with heavy emphasis on
peacemaking techniques.
- He has conducted classes over the past ten years in various areas of the
United States and has done over 1500 mediations himself.

Dean Calkins is an adjunct professor at two law schools where he provides
mediation training. He also conducts mediation training for lawyers and lay
persons. He offers a primary course which is 40 hours (five days). For the
lawyer this includes 40 hours CLE and 2 hours ethics. This course is a hands-on
course and requires each candidate to do two full mediations. It trains
candidates primarily in caucus mediation with emphasis on peacemaking
techniques.

The advanced course is 24 hours (three days) and covers such matters as
mediating in complex protracted litigation, class actions, dealing with
difficult clients, multiple parties. It reviews such techniques as using
polygraph tests, reverting trusts, etc. The course provides 24 CLE credits and
one hour ethics for lawyers. |
