Mediation Training

Calkins has conducted over 2100 mediations. ​ Whether dealing with major corporations or individuals injured in an auto accident, he has used the same peacemaker approach. Calkins is trained not only to mediate, but also to act as arbitrator in one-person or three-person panel. He also has had extensive experience with other forms of ADR.

Since 1996 Calkins has trained over 1,000 lawyers and 1300 law and undergraduate students in mediation skills and practices.


Training

Each January and August, Calkins conducts a 40-hour mediation training class for lawyers (40 hr. CLE, 3 hrs. Ethics for lawyers).

Classes are held at the Drake University Legal Clinic, 2400 University in Des Moines, Iowa.

This course is a hands-on course and requires each candidate to do two full mediations. The class trains participants primarily in caucus mediation with emphasis on peacemaking techniques. The course also covers mediating in complex protracted litigation, class actions, dealing with difficult clients, multiple parties. It reviews such techniques as using polygraph tests, reverting trusts, etc.

 

He also offers a three day, 24 hour advanced mediation course  for lawyers (24 hr .of CLE, 1 hr. Ethics). Call or email for dates.
